Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare interpersonal relationships of chronic psychotic patients who join in the psycho-social rehabilitation program with those who were inpatients or outpatients, to analyze the difference of interpersonal relationships according to general & disease-related characteristics, the scores of self-esteem & self -assertiveness. Subjects were twenty for rehabilitation group from D mental health center in Gwang-ju city and were twenty one for non-rehabilitation group from inpatient unit or outpatient unit at psychiatric department of C general hospital. Data were gathered from April 1 to May 30, 2004. Tools were self-esteem scale by Rosenberg(1965), selfassertiveness scale by Rathus(1973), and scale of interpersonal relationships by Chun(1964). The collected data were analyzed by percentage, X^2-test, Fisher exact probability test, t-test, ANOVA, Multiple comparison test using SPSS 11.5 version. The results were as follows: 1. The psycho-social rehabilitation program was effective to chronic psychotic patients' interpersonal relationships (t=2.82, p= .008), especially in subscale 'openness' (t=8.70, p< .001). 2. In chronic psychotic patients who join in psycho-social rehabilitation program, subjects who had higher score of self-esteem showed increasing the score of interpersonal relationship(F=12.44, p<.OO1). 3. Among chronic psychotic patients who join in psycho-social rehabilitation program, the patients who have an occupation before the onset of this disease took high score of interpersonal relationship (t=-2.11, p= .05 4. The psycho-social rehabilitation program was effective to chronic psychotic patients' self-assertiveness(t=2.72, p= .01). In conclusion. chronic psychotic patients who join in the psycho-social rehabilitation program had higher score of interpersonal relationship than chronic psychotic patients who were inpatients' or outpatients' unit. So did subscale 'openness'. Therefore, in order to the promotion of interpersonal relationship and social readustment, traditional hospital service of chronic psychotic patients is needed to have relations with psycho-social rehabilitation program continuously.
